Most people do not think of turning to their lawyer for relationship advice, but you would be surprised what lawyers learn about human relationships, just by doing their jobs. Divorce lawyers especially have seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to human relationships. Believe it or not, your divorce attorney probably knows a great deal about what can turn a marriage relationship sour.

In this article, we will look at two pieces of marriage advice that every divorce lawyer is familiar with.

2 pieces of relationship advice that every divorce lawyer knows

If you’re currently going through divorce proceedings, you may have already learned this information the hard way.

1. Honor your needs in the relationship: Before you go into a marriage, and throughout your marriage, it’s important for you to get in touch with your needs, wants and desires, and to stay true to them. For example, if you want to have children of your own, don’t try to convince yourself that being a stepparent is enough.

If you don’t honor your own needs in your relationship, you could come to resent your spouse. These resentments might seep into your relationship through passive-aggressive behaviors. Know who you are, know what you want, and get to know your partner before tying the knot.

Hindsight is 20-20, and sometimes it takes age and difficult life experience to learn the lesson of honoring your needs in your relationship.

2. Don’t spend too much time on Facebook and other social media sites: You might be proud of your marriage and your relationship, but that doesn’t mean you should broadcast the details of it on social media. You may also want to be careful about looking at your spouse’s social media activity. You should be interacting with your spouse in real life and in the day-to-day world.

Many relationships fall into discord as a result of misinterpreting a spouse’s “online persona” as an accurate reflection of the person that he or she is with you in real life. Overuse of social media can result in unnecessary jealousies, distrust and inaccurate judgments. Protect your marriage by staying away from social media.

Try to stay peaceful and calm when ending your marriage

Just as many people make mistakes during their marriages, they can also make mistakes during their divorce proceedings. Perhaps the worst mistake is to allow your divorce to turn contentious. Learning as much as you can about how to manage your divorce in a diplomatic fashion, however, will help you avoid most divorce pitfalls, save money and wrap up your legal proceedings in record time.
