What causes divorce after decades of marriage?

Most of us think that after a marriage has lasted ten or even twenty years, the couple has settled in to their life and divorce is unthinkable. But the fact is, many couples are divorcing later in life, a trend that may even be growing more common. Often, after such a long period of time, the couple has accumulated a great deal of wealth, meaning these couples usually require a high assets divorce.

There are a number of reasons why a couple may decide to split after many years of marriage. One common factor is the loss of an emotional connection with a spouse, often after the children have left the house. In some cases, childrearing becomes the main focus of a spousal relationship. When the children are gone, it can be difficult for some couples to transition back to the way things were before.

Others fall victim to the mid-life crisis. One Minnesota man says he moved to divorce after he was in a terrible car accident. After he recovered, he realized he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life in a loveless marriage.

Of course, there are coping methods that can help couples avoid a mid-life divorce. Experts say it’s important that couples stay connected through their childrearing years. They can do this by going on regular dates and planning nights away — no discussion of children allowed. Spouses should also try to keep the lines of communication open and honest, and to discuss their feelings, hopes and dreams.

Sometimes, however, divorce is inevitable. This is a common occurrence, even among those who have been married for many years. But despite the negative public perception of divorce, many couples don’t view it as a bad thing. Rather, for some, it is a chance to start over and begin a new set of adventures.
