Usher and ex-wife settle custody dispute

World famous R&B singer Usher has recently settled his child custody dispute with his former wife. They had two children together who are both still very young, and the custody dispute had become quite contentious as both parent struggled to retain rights to primary custody. In the end, Usher was awarded primary custody of the boys, aged 3 and 4.

This story has some familiar moments for many Minnesota families. Particularly in the struggle to make a child custody arrangement that is in the best interests of the child, many parents end up in adversarial roles, calling into question the other’s ability to parent in order to achieve primary custody.

It is certainly true in many cases that one or both parents have busy schedules, struggle with mental illness, or have other conditions that make it harder to attend to their children. The merits of these issues and the degree to which it will ultimately affect the children is often decided by a judge but can also be worked out in an out-of-court settlement agreement.

For the famous singer and his ex-wife, these issues took on added significance as they faced allegations about their parenting in the public eye. Celebrity divorces are often closely watched and highly publicized since they involve public figures and often negotiations about complex assets and business interests.
