‘Wonder Years’ star files for divorce

The actress who played Winnie Cooper on the hit TV show The Wonder Years has filed for divorce from her husband of three years. Danica McKellar cited irreconcilable differences in the divorce filing last week. Her soon-to-be-ex-husband is Mike Verta, a composer.

The couple dated for eight years before they were married in 2009. They have a one and half year-old son. The court filings ask for joint physical and legal custody of their child.

McKeller has remained successful since her days as a child star, authoring three best-selling math books aimed at young girls. Her publishing rights and royalties from The Wonder Years will are complex assets that will be difficult to divide, since future earnings from intellectual properties and other entertainment-related assets can be tricky to predict. Courts often use forensic accountants to predict future earnings of assets, but there may be considerations that they fail to take into account.

As with all divorce proceedings involving complex assets, this split will likely involve a careful calculation of each spouse’s contribution and a close look at what funds should be set aside to jointly care for their child.

Complex assets also require a close look at tax implications of a divorce, which can consume a significant portion of the value of assets if not handled carefully. Couples who own multiple properties together or who have jointly held businesses will want to consult a family law attorney who has handled these types of cases before to make sure that the best outcome is reached.
