Contentious divorce results in loss of job: Avoid the same fate

On Behalf of | Jul 14, 2017 | Divorce |

Think the battles that come from a contentious divorce will always stay in the courtroom? Think again. Unfortunately, some of the details of the divorce can leak out to the public. This can have a negative impact on each party’s reputation and have an effect on various parts of the lives of each individual even after the divorce is finalized.

For one couple, the impact of information provided from an upset spouse resulted in the termination of employment. While rare, this is a cautionary tale.

How could a divorce proceeding lead to termination of employment?

The divorce proceeding was not an amicable process. Both parties were upset and allegations were made. In this marriage, the wife held a position as a County Justice of the Peace. The allegations made during the divorce proceeding resulted in the state Supreme Court issuing a suspension on the judge’s ability to continue in her position. Essentially, she will likely lose her job as a result of information provided by her upset husband during the divorce.

It is important to note that the allegations in this case were serious. They included illegal drug use and sexually harassing her bailiff while on the bench.

How can I avoid a similar fate?

Contested divorces are not uncommon. However, it is not nearly as common to have evidence emerge during the divorce proceeding that results in getting fired from a job.

Even though it is not likely that you will be concerned about losing your job, it is likely you’d prefer to keep some of the details of the divorce as quiet as possible. Steps can be taken to help mitigate the risk of unwanted information becoming public. In these situations, it is wise to seek an attorney experienced with contested divorce matters to discuss your options.
