All-male rally seeks to end domestic violence

Domestic violence is a significant problem all throughout the country, including right here in the Lakeville area. Every day, into many women in America are murdered by either their boyfriend or husband. In nearly every case, their deaths could have been prevented. For many Minnesotans, domestic violence is a major problem. Recently, a group of men participated in a rally to end domestic abuse.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury for women between the ages of 15 and 44. It is also the reason behind many divorces. Last month, numerous men of all walks of life gathered to make a pledge to end domestic violence. The rally included former professional football stars Emmitt Smith and Roger Staubach.

All participants of the rally took five vows which included,

  1. Never hit a woman
  2. Speak out whenever abuse is seen
  3. Hold other men accountable
  4. Teach daughters how men should treat them
  5. Teach sons so respect woman

Across America, many men are getting away with abusing woman. In the state of Minnesota, domestic violence is considered a violent offense and is a legally punishable crime. Many victims are attacked by their spouses and often have a difficult time leaving. Furthermore, when presented with divorce, many spouses have been known to be abusive despite being non-violent for most of the marriage.

Victims of domestic violence are urged to leave their abusive spouse, especially with a pending divorce. Talking with an attorney prior to leaving can provide victims with a legal insight. Because Minnesota is a no fault divorce state, abusive spouses still have rights when it comes to child custody. For abused spouses concerned about the safety of their children and themselves, it is imperative that they seek help immediately.
